Call for Applications: Managing Editor – Political Geography

Start date: 1 October 2025

Political Geography (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/political-geography) is seeking to appoint a Managing Editor to support the editorial workflow and help streamline journal operations. This role is ideal for early-career researchers with a strong interest in academic publishing and an ambition to develop professionally within the field. The position offers opportunities for increased responsibilities over time and a deeper involvement in the journal’s strategic direction.

About the Role

The Managing Editor will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief (Filippo Menga) and the broader editorial team (Mia Bennett, Kate Coddington, Deirdre Conlon, Patricia Ehrkamp, Charis Enns, Caroline Nagel and Olivier Walther), playing a key role in maintaining the quality and efficiency of the journal’s peer-review process. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Managing correspondence with authors and reviewers to ensure timely responses.
  • Support initial evaluations of incoming submissions
  • Ensuring compliance with formatting, ethics, and submission guidelines.
  • Liaising with Elsevier’s production and editorial support teams.
  • Supporting the editorial team in coordinating special issues and other strategic initiatives.

This position is particularly suitable for early-career scholars with a demonstrated interest in political geography and a solid understanding of the field’s key debates, literatures, and trajectories. Familiarity with critical approaches to space, power, and territory is essential, as is an appreciation of how political geography intersects with adjacent disciplines. While the role is primarily administrative, it offers a unique opportunity to develop editorial experience and to engage directly with the cutting edge of political geographic research.

Qualifications

  • A PhD (or near completion) in geography or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with the academic publishing process, preferably with some editorial or reviewing experience.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international team.
  • Attention to detail and a strong sense of academic integrity.

Terms and Application

The Managing Editor role is envisioned as a part-time commitment, with flexible working hours and a modest annual stipend provided by Political Geography’s publisher, Elsevier. The initial term will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal and progression within the editorial structure.

To apply, please send your CV and a 1–2 page statement of interest by August 15 2025 to Sonia Pratt (s.pratt.1@elsevier.com). Your statement should outline your editorial experience (if any), your research background, and your motivation for joining the Political Geography editorial team.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited for a brief interview and will be asked to provide references upon request.
